American stout ranges from dark brown to black.

What is American Stout?

American stout is the American interpretation of stout, brewed using rich dark malt and aromatic American hops. Compared to European stouts, this beer tends to have more hop character and bitterness.

It is one of the darkest and strongest-bodied American beers, particularly suited for winter indulgence. In the flavour profile, you can detect roasted coffee, dark chocolate, and caramel notes.

Origin Story

American stout is a beer style born out of the craft beer revolution in the US, which combines the tradition of English & Irish stouts with the rich use of hops characteristic in the US.

The homebrew version of this beer was previously known as West Coast Stout, indicating its high hop content.

It is believed that the first brewery to start brewing stout in America was New Albion Brewery in 1978.

Over the subsequent decades, American stout evolved into a beer style that offered brewers ample room for experimentation in terms of production technology, malt and hop usage, and exciting additional ingredients. Ingredients such as chocolate, fruits, coffee, liquorice, and various other herbs have all found their way into the brewing pot.

Even today, the diverse range of American stouts offers beer enthusiasts plenty of joy in exploration.
