Varies from copper to dark brown. The colour can also be light, but usually, rye malts are used to impart a bread-like, slightly spicy additional flavour, which comes from darker malts.

What is Rye Ale?

Rye ale is an ale brewed with rye malt. In the beer world, there is no strict threshold for when a beer can be called a rye ale, but generally, the proportion of rye malt should be sufficient to influence the flavour, which typically happens from about 10 per cent.

The taste of rye ale is often described as spicy, bread-like, peppery, and/or earthy.

Hops are not the main feature of this beer; they are just there to balance the flavour. Rye ale is generally not bitter.

Origin Story

In regions where rye was cultivated and beer was brewed, there was likely a time when rye was incorporated in the brewing grains (likely in Estonia as well), although there is no definite evidence of this.

Written sources mention Bavarian rye beer (Roggenbier), which was brewed until the 15th century when rye was reserved solely for breadmaking. The revival of rye beer occurred in the late 20th century.
