What is Blonde Ale?

Blonde ale or golden ale is a beer style characterized by its light golden colour and balanced flavour profile. It is generally easy to drink and not overly bitter or strong.

The flavour profile includes hints of sweet malt and subtle bready undertones.

Blonde ales from the New World are generally more similar to English bitter — malty and hoppy, while in Europe, they may include some flavour additives (e.g. spices) due to Belgian influences.

Origin Story

Blonde ale emerged in the 1980s alongside the craft beer explosion in the USA when a certain type of pale ale was dubbed "blonde". Its historical predecessors include English pale ale, Belgian blond, and German kölsch.

Craft brewers in the USA sought alternatives to lagers and wanted to offer something distinctive yet easy to drink. Blonde ale was the perfect choice for consumers who wanted to try something new but weren’t ready for dark, strong, or heavily hopped beers.

Today, blonde ale is widespread worldwide and has acquired characteristics and flavour profiles unique to each place of origin. The American version is typically sweeter, not very strong, but certainly hoppy. In Europe, however, it has generally reached a higher alcohol content (as much as 6%) and can be brewed with extravagant additives (spices and herbs).
