Blond ale ranges from pale yellow to golden and is very clear.

What is Blond?

Blond (also blonde) is the Belgian brewers’ response to the international success of pilsner. It’s a light-coloured, easily drinkable ale brewed mainly with pilsner malt varieties.

Compared to pilsner, blond is stronger with a delicately spicy and fruity flavour profile derived from Belgian ale yeast. Sometimes, sugar and spices (coriander, ginger, etc.) are added during brewing.

The taste and aroma of hops are not very prominent.

Origin Story

Blond is a relatively new beer style (ca 100 years old), emerging as a response to the international success of pilsner. Belgian brewers adopted light pilsner malt varieties and noble hops, combining them with their ale yeast.

The result was a golden, clear beer that was easily drinkable like lager, though it was still strong and boasted the distinctive flavour profile typical of Belgian beers.

Golden strong ale, blond, and tripel all developed around the same time from the same idea. It is uncertain whether blond evolved from golden strong ale or vice versa.
